Position Summary

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research is a multi-disciplinary “think-and-do tank” housed on the Rice University campus in central Houston, focusing on urban issues in Houston, the American Sunbelt, and around the world.

The Staff Researcher will work primarily with Kinder Institute staff on developing and implementing the projects of the Institute’s Urban and Metropolitan Governance (UMG) Program, but will also collaborate with other research areas within the Institute. The Staff Researcher will focus on issues associated with policy and governance in Houston, the greater metropolitan region, and in cities across the nation. Examples may include issues around housing, green space development, or regional decision-making. The day-to-day work of the Staff Researcher will consist of the collection, synthesis, and presentation of data and research. The Staff Researcher will work with relevant Kinder Institute staff both on the presentation of salient data and on the writing of connected reports.

This position is funded by a research grant; the appointment is expected to continue for a period no more than 12 months.

The position has an expected start date of August 2017.

Public policy, sociology, urban studies, economics, urban planning, or another related field.

Master’s degree.

Preference will be given to applicants with strong research and/or writing experience.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

Skills Required

- Ability to participate in both qualitative and quantitative research.

- Ability to produce clear, analytical writing products.

- Strong skills in communication and attention to detail required.

- Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with other staff members.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Skills Preferred

- Experience with statistical software, such as SPSS or Stata.

- Experience with visualization software, such ArcGIS and Tableau.

- Experience or interest in social science and policy work.

Internal / External Contacts

Internal: Rice research community as well as faculty, staff and students.

External: Research communities and external stakeholders outside Rice.

Physical Demands

Position may involve sitting at a computer for up to 8 hours per day.

Working Conditions
