Position Summary

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research is a multi-disciplinary “think-and-do tank” housed on the Rice University campus in central Houston, focusing on urban issues in Houston, the American Sun Belt, and around the world.

Under the supervision of the Director of Research Management, the UDO Research Fellow will be primarily responsible for conducting research and producing work products for the Urban Disparity and Opportunity program (UDO). The program studies the existence and causes of unequal opportunities for different social statuses within a society. Areas of research within the program include studies on inequality issues based on characteristics such as gender, race, and ethnicity, location in income and wealth, employment, social mobility, education, health, and community-engaged research. The UDO Research Fellow will conduct assigned tasks and produce final work products within project’s specified timeline and requirement. The UDO Research Fellow will assist the program director in shaping the overall research agenda, methods and dissemination of research, and collaborating with the communications team.

In the course of research, the UDO Research Fellow may be asked to join the program director for meetings with partner organizations and government representatives. In addition, the UDO Research Fellow will work with the research team at the Kinder Institute to prepare data sets and documentation following the standard data management practice.

This position is funded by a research grant; the appointment is expected to continue for a period no more than 24 months.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

- Ability to complete multiple concurrent work assignments, set priorities and solve problems while encountering interruptions in a fast-paced environment and maintaining composure and concentration.

- Willingness to assist on projects dealing with subjects outside of current field of expertise.

-Excellent time management and organizational skills.

-Ability to work independently and on a team and be flexible.

- Excellent written and oral communication as well as interpersonal skills.

- Ability to collect, organize, and manage data, both quantitative and qualitative.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and statistical software (e.g. Stata, SPSS, R).

- Willingness to participate in projects that involve community engagement and outside of the office research.

- Must have a mature attitude and maintain good working relationship with partner organizations.

Skills Preferred

- Knowledge of mapping software such as ArcGIS.

- Willingness to undertake projects that require the acquisition of additional knowledge or skills.

Internal / External Contacts

Internal: Frequent contact with Rice faculty, staff and students.

External: potential and existing research partners, community members, government staff and officials, and researchers outside of Rice.

Physical Demands

Sitting for up to 8 hours per day, ability to move from office to sites around campus and the city.

Working Conditions

General office environment, travel and weekend work rarely and based on current project deadlines.

- Conducts rigorous research and critical analyses of data and policy for assigned projects.

- Consults with program director to determine methodology, structured goals based on scope of the research projects.

- Assists program director with program development and community engagement activities.

- Writes up analyses and drafts research reports; produces work products in conjunction with UDO program team, such as research reports and briefs, interactive maps, and blog posts.

- Attends research meetings and presents key findings to community members and policy makers at meetings organized by the Kinder Institute.

- Provides research assistance and support to partner organizations as directed.
