Position Summary

The Senior Project Manager manages all aspects of new lab construction and lab renovation projects. S/he prepares budget estimates and reports, prepares project and contract documents, oversees outside design professionals and their selection, oversees preparation of construction documents, manages the contractor selection process, and manages the project team throughout both design and construction. The Senior Project Manager often provides oversight and coordination of multiple projects, including projects managed by different project managers that are related in scope or location, such as labs, housing, etc.

Skills Required

- The candidate must have a general understanding of various research programs and be able to anticipate the types and features of laboratory space each research program may require.
- The candidate must have an understanding of research equipment and instrumentation, must be able to predict utility requirements and must be able to recognize and identify special lab space needs.
- The candidate must be able to develop preliminary budget and schedule information for construction and project budgets for laboratory renovation and new construction.
- The candidate is expected to have an understanding of building code requirements for laboratory construction and must be able to coordinate with the university Environmental Health and Safety department to incorporate required safety elements into projects.
- The candidate will maintain regular communication with the Dean of Engineering and the Dean of Natural Sciences to support lab projects associated with faculty hiring and faculty retention.
- Knowledge and experience with Excel spreadsheets, Word, and Microsoft Project scheduling software.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for lab installations.
- Knowledge of research requirements that dictate the mechanical, electrical and plumbing designs for labs.
- Candidate must also have good communication skills, both verbal and written.
Attention to detail is necessary.

Skills Preferred

Knowledge and experience with CAD and BIM systems.

Internal / External Contacts

1. Within the University:
a. Will be required to work professionally with campus clients at all levels in developing programs and construction plans.
b. Will need to coordinate with building occupants to provide contractor work time with minimum occupant disruption.
c. Will need to work with General Counsel’s office relative to contract negotiations.

2. Outside the University:
a. Must interact professionally with Governmental agencies when seeking permits both in person and by phone.
b. Must interact professionally with consultants and contractors when performing project activity.

Physical Demands

Frequent site inspections at many locations, both on and off campus.

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
