Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with evening or weekend work as needed by emerging situations, campus events and other priorities, and a weeklong shift serving as the on-call media contact 24/7 about ever six weeks.

Position Summary

This position serves as media relations specialist for assigned beats, writes and promotes Rice news releases and stories with local and national media outlets, and serves as backup for the director as needed.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree
Concentration / Degree Type

Journalism, public relations, English, liberal arts, communications or related field.

Substitution for Education Requirement

May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Skills Required

- Writing skills to concisely and accurately explain complex subjects in a way that makes them interesting and usable to various news venues and understandable to laypersons.
- Strong people skills and ability to work in a deadline-driven, results-oriented environment with media and PR professionals and with a wide variety of clients, including Rice faculty, administrators and students.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision, adhering to priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- Strong computer skills.
- Social media skills.

Extensive contact with Rice faculty, staff and students and with external news media.

Physical Demands

Normal office environment on Rice campus.

- Cultivate faculty, staff, students and other sources for stories and expert commentary. 
- Proactively pitch to news media Rice stories, research, expertise and other news tips.
- Respond to media requests.
- Use social media to promote Rice’s external media efforts.
- Track and report media placements.
