Position Summary

The Executive Director of the Career Development Office (CDO) is responsible for overseeing the career development and placement process for the students of the MBA programs and alumni of the Jones Graduate School of Business (JGSB). The executive director is responsible for two main work streams: employer relations and counseling and professional development. The executive director develops and overseeing an advising system that provides effective counseling and career preparation for MBA students. The executive director is responsible for increasing the visibility and reputation of the JGSB among prospective employers, locally and nationally, to attract the best available jobs to student and alumni stakeholders. The executive director is responsible for developing and overseeing a concierge/facilitated network model to increase effectiveness of support for students and alumni gaining employment outside of traditional on-campus recruiting.

- Customer service experience.

Skills Required

- Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and manage at both strategic and operating level.
- Effective public speaking skills and executive presence.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills (both oral and written). Able to work with minimal supervision and be energetic and self-motivated. Must be able to plan, implement and evaluate career development strategies and have strong team management skills in working with diverse personalities and interests. Must be able to maintain confidentiality, professional approach and positive attitude.
- Able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Requires ability to make sound, independent decisions and lead others.
- Proficiency in applicable software and technology. Required software: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Explorer.
- Must demonstrate sound judgment and strong assessment skills regarding the academic, employment and personal characteristics of each applicant.
- Extensive cultural awareness.
- Able to establish and maintain strong rapport with current and previous Jones School students, administration, faculty and corporate representatives to represent the school.

Skills Preferred

- Proficiency with Banner system.

Internal / External Contacts

The Executive Director of the Career Development Office interacts with both internal and external stakeholders. Internal Jones School stakeholder interaction includes working with faculty, students, alumni, and staff. External stakeholder interaction includes representatives from other schools, alumni, Council of Overseers, Jones Partners, corporate entities, and non-Jones School Rice University departments.

Physical Demands

Normal office environment.

Working Conditions

Domestic and international travel required throughout the year to promote the Jones School (approximately 15%). Required to attend after-hours functions (several times per month). Could be as frequently as two nights a week in the height of the recruiting season.

- Develop and manage career planning and placement services to help students and alumni engage in self-assessment, obtain occupational information, explore a range of employment opportunities, present themselves effectively as candidates and obtain optimal placement in employment.
- Work collaboratively with the associate dean of degree programs to develop CDO strategies, initiatives and plans. Lead and direct the implementation of CDO strategies, plans and initiatives.

- Lead and direct CDO relationships with employers. Develop strong relationships with corporations and non-profit organizations hiring MBAs with the intent of attracting them to conduct on-campus recruiting at the JGSB. Lead concierge/ facilitated networking initiatives. Travel nationally and internationally as needed to build relationships and attract on-campus recruiters. Develop a database of diverse representatives and companies throughout the U.S. through meetings and correspondence.
