Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours and weekends during peak processing (April-October, January-February).

Position Summary

The Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of JGSB Student Financial Services, will provide progressive leadership and administrative effectiveness in student financial services, through emphasis on individual attention to students, and a high quality service delivery model.

Experience Preferred

- Knowledge of Standard and Borrower-based Academic Year financial aid structures.
- Knowledge of Ellucian (Banner) operating systems; familiarity with state and federal reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of federal and state legislation and regulations governing financial aid and VA Education Benefits.
- Knowledgeable regarding VA Education Benefits and accounts management.
- Experience as a student loan coordinator.
- Experience managing corporate clients and corporate sponsorship accounts.

License/Certification Required

- Successful track record of working with diverse student populations in a positive manner.
- Excellent communication and counseling skills, as well as strong analytical ability.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

- Basic accounting and computer skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under established time constraints.

Internal: Extensive interaction with JGSB Recruiting and Admissions, Student Program Office, and Rice Cashier’s Office, Office of the Registrar, and Office of Financial Aid.

External: Extensive interaction with prospects, students, and alumni. As well as the Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas Veterans Commission, Department of Defense, Department of Education, and professional communities (TASFAA, SWASFAA, NASFAA, WAVES, and NAVPA).

Physical Demands

Office environment with light-moderate (typically less than 20 pounds) lifting.
Work prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and in front of a computer (up to 8 hours a day).

Working Conditions

Must be able and willing to work extended hours and weekends during peak processing (April-October, January-February). Work in a fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions to work flow; interaction with a diverse group of people, occasional travel for training or meetings during the year.

- Active participant in the recruiting and admissions process and strategy with regard to student financials.
- Creates and presents financial aid presentations, both on and off campus, and hosts online webinars.
- Creates and manages prospect/student-facing interfaces (websites, communications, instructional videos, etc.).

Description of Job Duty

- Counsels and provides customer service to students regarding their funding options, application requirements, and alternative financing avenues.
- Serves as financial aid subject matter expert.
- Evaluates and analyzes financial information submitted by applicants to determine eligibility for financial aid and determines type and amount of aid to be awarded in accordance with regulation and institutional standards.
- Notifies students of federal/state/private loans awards and incomplete application and/or disbursement requirements.
- Works directly with students to facilitate solutions and resolve complex issues regarding their financial aid package, satisfactory academic progress, and other financial aid concerns.
- Counsels program graduates regarding student loan repayment plans, options, and requirements.

Description of Job Duty

- Responsible for administering federal, state, and private loan programs.
- Responsible for processing and reconciliation of institutional scholarship programs.
- Submits and manages requests for student loan draw-downs from the Research Accounting Department.
- Reports program data to appropriate federal and state organizations.
- Coordinates with other departments to manage and reconcile financial aid programs.
- Remains current on federal, state, and institutional legislation, regulation, and policies.
- Performs withdrawal refund calculations and Return of Title 4 calculations in accordance with federal regulation and institutional policy.
