Work Schedule

This job usually is a 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday role. However, as necessary, may have to work some weekends and nights too.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Assistance provides cost effective, efficient, and reliable maintenance service in preserving, and upgrading the integrity of the campus parking facilities, vehicles and equipment with minimal disruption to those parking and/or the building occupants. This position provides basic carpentry, cleaning, and painting services for the parking facilities at Rice.

Experience Preferred

Experience in the parking industry at a university setting is preferred. Minor asphalt patching, parking lot striping and lot cleaning experience with equipment a plus.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past three years and no citations for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

This person will have visibility as a university representative. S/he must have a pleasant personality, a cooperative attitude, and generate a positive impression with the public and Rice community. This person will meet frequently with students, faculty, and staff of the university. This person will have contact with the outside community and with visitors attending events on campus.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs daily to move items such as barricades, gate equipment, paint, asphalt bags and other supplies. Must be able to move around campus to access all Rice buildings, parking lots and garages. Must be able to drive golf carts, vehicles, power scrubbers and sweepers; operate hand tools; and must have manual dexterity to complete basic mechanical repairs.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Some indoor, but mostly outdoor (up to 75% of a regular work day and 90% for special events and projects) work environments which include parking garages, offices, parking lots, storage rooms, and streets. Includes exposure to temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, etc). Work can be stressful at times. Work Hazards: Exposure to fumes, exhaust, and possibility of injury from operating vehicles, heavy machinery, and power tools. Work Schedule: Varied work schedule up to 20% of the time and may be required to work overtime up to 20% of the time although most hours will be adjusted to minimize overtime.
