Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon). Night and weekend work will also be required during peak traveling and reading seasons and for occasional special events.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director will be responsible for the recruitment and selection of undergraduate prospects, applicants, and admitted students to Rice University. This includes off-campus travel. This position has additional project responsibilities that may focus on any combination of the following: support of on-campus recruitment activities; marketing efforts, including print, electronic and other communications with prospective students; recruitment activities targeting international or minority students; internal staff training; managing alumni and/or student volunteers; and/or other projects as needed. Assistant Directors may be tasked as project managers for any of the above efforts and will be expected to serve as role models and mentors for newer staff members.

License/Certification Required

Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with no more than three moving violations and/or at fault accidents within the past 36 months, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

- Public relations skills needed to respond to motivated, highly anxious families in the college search process.
- Travel management: plan and implement travel including flights, hotels, car rentals and navigation tools.
- Analytical thinking skills: ability to execute holistic evaluation process for selecting freshmen, transfers, visiting students and summer programs.
- Creative problem solver.
- Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
- Computer proficiency: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, chat rooms, email, and electronic calendar programs.

Prospective students and their families (daily), Rice student volunteers and workers (daily), high school counselors (frequently /seasonally), alumni volunteers (often-several times/year), Rice faculty and staff from other divisions (frequently/monthly).

Physical Demands

Must be able to move 30 lb. boxes, luggage and materials when traveling. Able to be mobile in a variety of high school settings for meetings in the guidance office, college fairs, and parent programs.

Working Conditions

Willingness to travel on weekends required (including Sundays). Willingness to travel by air, car, and train where appropriate and as governed by university policies. Up to seven to nine weeks of travel per year, must alternate Saturday office coverage with other staff members September through May. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Travel, reading, and evaluation and yield recruitment seasons may require extended working hours. Must have internet access from home. Non-smoking office environment.
