Position Summary

The Arborist II is responsible for the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs on campus with the goal of promoting the health, safety and vigor of campus trees. The Arborist II diagnoses, reports and addresses tree pest, nutrient, environmental and structural problems. In addition, the Arborist II recommends corrective measures and oversees these measures. This position mostly works independently and occasionally supervises the work of the Arborist I.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within thirty days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations or at fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositons for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the last five years.

License/Certification Preferred

International Society of Arboriculture certified Tree Worker/Climber Specialist or International Society of Arboriculture certified Arborist.

Skills Required

- Must be able to read and write in English.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Must be able to demonstrate safe tree climbing practices.
- Must be able to follow instructions and have familiarity with ANSI A300 standards for tree care operations.
- Must possess knowledge of arborist practices and safety guidelines and apply them in the field.
- Must be able to operate necessary equipment.

Skills Preferred

- Ability to make field decisions regarding tree and shrub maintenance and the ability to work closely as a member of an Arborist team.

Internal / External Contacts

Frequent, extensive contact with Grounds employees and other FE&P employees including craftspeople, project managers and management. Frequently answers questions and participates in planning with committees, consultants, architects, contractors etc. Occasionally, contacts and negotiates with vendors and participates in off-campus training opportunities.

Physical Demands

HEAVY: Exert up to 70 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently and/or 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking, standing, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 8 hours per day and multi-limb coordination to operate heavy equipment and drive a vehicle. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, see, reach, climb and balance. Required to use tree climbing equipment and wear personal protective equipment.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Primarily an outdoor work environment which includes exposure to temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, etc). Work Hazards: Exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, pollen, noise, and hazardous chemicals such as insecticides, fungicide, and fertilizer. Much work will occur at heightened elevations on ladders and scaffolding. Work with heavy equipment such as chain saw, truck, tractor, chipper and stump grinder is required. Work Schedule: May be required to work overtime. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
