Position Summary

The Senior Wireless Network Engineer (WNE) will serve as the subject matter expert for wireless technologies and capabilities supporting the business needs of Rice University and executing wireless projects.

The Senior WNE will work very closely with other Network Architects, Network Engineers, Information Technology Directors, Assistant Directors, and Managers in order to properly design and support these systems. The Senior WNE is responsible for the technical aspects of the design, management, and support of the wireless systems and related networking systems that support the successful operation of Rice’s campus networks.

They will lead the analysis of customer requirements and development of wireless solutions to meet required performance and coverage and mentor more junior staff. Lead and oversee the work of tech services staff for wireless.

This position will do the following:
- Develop wireless coverage/heat maps utilizing industry standard tools.
- Recommend wireless hardware and software to meet requirements and minimize cost. Plan, schedule, and execute entire end-to-end installations.
- Interface directly with campus representatives, and subcontractors to communicate project plans and status.
- Coordinate and execute site surveys to determine the actual layout and placement of the Wi-Fi equipment to provide optimal Wi-Fi coverage, data rates, network capacity, roaming capability, and QoS.
- Develop and execute wireless test plans to include test strategy, criteria, test cases, schedule, locations, and expected & actual results.
- Install and Configure servers, routers, switches, and access points.
- Integrate new wireless capabilities into existing network infrastructure and systems.
- Install and configure wireless software solutions.

- Experience as a network architect or engineer working with advanced network protocols and architectures for wired and wireless networks.

- Experience leading projects to deploy wireless technology and infrastructure.

- Experience with Cisco WISM-2 WLC and Cisco Prime.

- CWNE (Certified Wireless Network Expert) or -
CWAP (Certified Wireless Analysis Professional) or CWDP (Certified Wireless Design Professional) or CCNP Wireless (Cisco Certified Network Professional Wireless).

- Excellent knowledge of wireless controller and access point deployment and implementation.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve both infrastructure and client wireless problems.

- Capabilities to design, plan, establish, and optimize wireless networks.
- Understanding of OSI Model, IP Protocol suites and Quality of Service.

- Understanding of IPv4 & IPv6 IP address planning and implementations.
- Understanding of advanced network technologies and solutions including IPv6, MPLS, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, HSRP, multicast, policy-based routing, ether-channel, QoS, Load balancing, and VPN tunnels.
- Ability to work with clients and other staff on all levels – in small groups, one on one with supervisors, staff colleagues, representatives from external organizations, and vendors.
- Initiative and ability to work independently with a willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to complete projects and tasks independently and with limited direct supervision.

Skills Preferred

- Hands-on experience with hardware and software from 2 or more networking vendors (Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, etc. ) is strongly preferred.
- Experience with technical aspects of and design of topologies for Dense Wavelength Division – Multiplexing.
- Working understanding of the technical aspects of implementing and operating VoIP systems.
- Hands-on experience with data cabling installation practices as well as fiber and copper materials is strongly desired.
- Understanding of various tools like , Solarwinds, Zabbix, Extrahop, and/or ServiceNow.

Physical Demands

Frequent lifting and carrying of small equipment up to 25 lbs.

Will work in multiple spaces on campus that will include a variety of access capabilities and challenges (stairs, crawl ways, tight spaces, etc.).

Working Conditions

Will be expected to appropriately handle stressful situations, critical deadlines, and a customer base with both high service level expectations and technical sophistication.
Will occasionally need to travel overnight for training or conference/meeting attendance.
May be required to work nights and weekends during planned and unplanned outages and other special circumstances.
Will be expected to be reachable at all times (except during scheduled vacation). Will be required to carry a cell phone with text messaging capabilities. Will need to respond to severe incident escalation by on-call Network Specialists and Network Architect.

Description of Job Duty

- Coordinate efforts of senior network engineers/technicians, professional information systems staff and other OIT personnel. Project management duties include needs assessment, detailed requirement specification, general and detailed design, implementation, staffing status reporting, contracting, bid document development, installation, testing, shakedown and post implementation reviews.
- Direct the work of OIT staff on the upgrade, installation and management of wiring and electronics for the campus network infrastructure. This direction provides the technical oversight and quality assurance needed to provide high reliability networking services.
- Define and plan the scope of future network systems and services, including but not limited to the campus core routing and switching platforms, the campus edge network platform, the campus wireless platform utilizing a centralized controller-based enterprise-class wireless system, the campus firewall platform and the campus remote access systems.
- Provide high-level technical support for Campus Services and OIT staff on support cases.
- Develop and negotiate agreements for projects with other campus groups or external contractors/vendors. Establish agreements with other OIT groups when the service requires development from multiple groups.
- Develop network project plans including tasks to be performed, task estimates and target completion dates. Provide project feedback to customers and OIT management.
- Determine potential impact of new network systems on current OIT resources and operating policies. Ensure network communications policies and procedures are in compliance with networking technical standards.
- Be available or on standby to respond to problems with the campus data network.
- Serve as primary contact for customers, other OIT groups to provide technical standards and policy advice and expert time regarding data transport network systems.
- Serve as liaison between OIT and consultants/vendors. Ensure contract requirements have been met.
