Position Summary

The Development and Alumni Relations Division is looking for a strong, highly skilled writing professional to support Rice University’s fundraising and engagement efforts. Working collaboratively with a team of writers, communications professionals and fundraising staff, the Development Writer crafts compelling and persuasive case prospectuses and proposals for a variety of fundraising priorities, such as research initiatives, student programs, capital projects and more. This involves meeting with and interviewing key university stakeholders — including university leaders, donors, alumni, faculty, staff and students — to plan projects, strategize on messaging, and articulate how donors will play an important role in Rice’s mission. Other writing and editing assignments will include solicitation and acknowledgement letters, brochures, website content, newsletters, stories, and other related materials as needed.

- Experience working in a nonprofit fundraising campaign or initiative.

Skills Required

- Ability to research and synthesize information from a variety of sources into concise, compelling letters, proposals, stories, and other printed or electronic/web pieces in support of the development process.
- Must be a strong editor, with the ability to identify and communicate the focus of a particular document and have experience proofreading and editing documents for grammatical and content accuracy in compliance with Associated Press (AP) guidelines and the university’s style manual.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, discretion and critical judgment to operate with independence and confidence while interfacing with staff in all departments of Development and Alumni Relations and throughout the university to complete writing projects in a timely fashion.
- Computing skills in a Windows environment using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Skills Preferred

- Experience in a PC Windows environment.
- Experience using all components of the Microsoft Office suite.

Internal / External Contacts

INTERNAL: Frequent contact with university staff, faculty, and administrators at all levels.

EXTERNAL: This position requires contact with people outside the university, including work with Rice volunteers, donors, and outside vendors etc.

Physical Demands

Work long hours in front of a computer for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions

Will spend many hours per day using a computer, in strategy meetings, and meeting with others on collaborative projects.

- Provide strong and varied writing and editing, with emphases on persuasive case writing, technical writing, and in-depth, descriptive writing.
- Write case prospectuses and proposals for major gifts and principal gifts with guidance from fundraising and communications staff.
- Help plan, develop, and implement creative strategies for fundraising initiatives.
- Draft fundraising materials for schools and departments by researching, conducting interviews, and summarizing findings into persuasive documents.
- Assignments also may include articles, brochures, magazine advertisements, presentations, solicitation letters, stories, web and email copy, and internal documents such as training manuals and intranet content.

Description of Job Duty

- Collaborate with partners within the Development and Alumni Relations division — including Communications teammates dedicated to annual giving and other fundraising “beats” — to work on joint projects and initiatives, to promote Rice’s brand uniformly across the division, and to enhance relationships with Rice’s constituents.
- When necessary, serve as the point person for creative decisions on select assignments: lead brainstorming sessions with division partners (e.g. gift planning team) and creative staff, pitch concepts, organize planning sessions, and work collaboratively on strategy and goals.
- Serve as copy editor and proofreader on other communication projects as needed.
