Work Schedule

Due to the Parking Office being open almost 24/7, parking attendants need to be able to work any hours of the day and any day of the week. Overtime and shift differential pay happen occasionally.

Position Summary

The Parking Attendant controls access to and monitors usage of assigned parking facilities, collects parking charges from customers, interacts with visitors to provide information and assistance, and reports necessary repairs or problems to appropriate individuals. This position also performs minor gate repairs and keeps the parking facilities clean.

Previous computer systems and customer service experience desired. Experience in parking fee-based computer systems, traffic and parking control devices accounting and revenue control procedures.

This person will have visibility as a university representative. S/he must have a pleasant personality, a cooperative attitude, and generate a positive impression with the public and Rice community. This person will meet frequently with students, faculty, and staff of the university. This person will have contact with the outside community and with visitors attending events on campus.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs daily to move items such as barricades, gate equipment and other supplies. Must be able to move around campus to access all Rice buildings, parking lots and garages. Must be able to drive golf carts, vehicles, power scrubbers and sweepers; operate hand tools; and must have manual dexterity to complete basic mechanical repairs. 

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor (up to 75% of a regular work day and 90% for special events) work environments which include parking garages, offices, parking lots.  Includes exposure to temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, etc). Work can be stressful at times. Work Hazards: Exposure to fumes, exhaust, and possibility of injury from operating vehicles, heavy machinery, and power tools. Work Schedule: Varied work schedule up to 40% of the time and may be required to work overtime up to 25% of the time although most hours will be adjusted to minimize overtime.

Description of Job Duty

- Maintains a neat appearance and provides information, directions, and assistance to campus visitors using the parking facilities.
- Opens lots or garage for business and controls exits by revenue control equipment.
- Collects parking charges if revenue control equipment is not in service or during special events as required. Records and reconciles parking transactions.
- Observes parking areas by patrolling on foot, sitting in the parking office, and/or viewing with electronic monitoring equipment.
- Reports problems such as missing parking signs, equipment failure, needed repairs, and other general maintenance needs to supervisor and/or designated staff.
- Contacts campus police to report vehicle or pedestrian accidents and other problems where police action is needed.
- Insures necessary forms and supplies are available in the parking office.
- Prepares appropriate revenue and other reports from the parking revenue control system.
