Position Summary

This position provides direction to a group of 1-8 Custodian I’s and Custodian II’s in various custodial functions, coordinates and schedules work to service special events, and leads the custodial team in furniture set-up for different events, floor cleaning projects, and general custodial maintenance of buildings assigned. This position also assists with the distribution of supplies and inspects the work of Custodian I and II staff. This individual will perform Custodian I and II duties as required (custodial support for large events, removing trash from restrooms and different areas as assigned, floor and/or glass cleaning projects, as well as cleaning and polishing furniture and other items, including chalk boards and walls). The Lead Custodian will also perform special assignments in relation to custodial services at the BRC.

- Extensive contact with students, faculty, staff, and tenants on a daily basis.
- Daily contact with visitors, customers, and vendors.

Physical Demands

HEAVY – Exert up to 70 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking or standing up to 8 hours per day and multi-limb coordination to operate heavy equipment and drive a vehicle. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, lift, see, reach, climb, and balance.
- Must be able to operate buffing machine, shampoo machine, vacuum cleaner, water extractor machine, and pressure washer in order to train employees.
- Must be able to operate electric carts and gasoline scooter.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings which may include offices, laboratories, classrooms, athletics facilities, covered walkways, etc. May be exposed to temperature and weather extremes when traveling between buildings or in facilities that are not climate controlled.

Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.

Work Schedule: There is a possibility of overtime weekly. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to the BRC, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the BRC Director of Operations for the duration of an emergency event.

- Leads a group of 1-8 people in performing daily custodial job duties as well as furniture setup and special cleaning.
- Monitors and inspects all work in progress.
- Provides on the job and classroom training in custodial procedures.

- Pressure washing and scrubbing of surfaces.
- Cleaning, polishing, and storing all equipment after use.
- Moving furniture frequently for event set-ups.
- Ensures excellent customer service is adhered to.
- Plans and accomplishes team goals.
