Position Summary

The Rice 360 Assistant Director, Communications is responsible for advancing the Institute’s mission by developing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive communications and marketing effort to enhance visibility of its programs, expand the Institute’s audience and prominence and increase donor support. This position is responsible for the editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all Rice 360 communications needs, including the quarterly newsletter, invitations, website, student informational documents, promotional and event materials and social media. Duties also include assisting with Rice 360 development-related events and other conferences and meetings.

Skills Required

- Outstanding written and oral presentation skills.
- Strong computer skills, high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Publisher, etc.
- Ability to plan and execute complex events including international meetings, symposia, and colloquia.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be well organized and demonstrate outstanding written and oral communication skills and effectiveness both as a leader and team member.
- Must be able to cultivate and maintain productive relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, and external audiences.

Skills Preferred

- Knowledge of communications issues related to higher education.
- Familiar with new media applications and social media outlets.
- Knowledge of the interests and needs of engineering, science, technology and education reporters in multiple forms of media highly desirable.
- Ability to use imagination and innovation in effectively communicating with appropriate audiences and constituent groups.

Internal / External Contacts

- Significant contact with leaders, managers and communications specialists in Public Affairs and the Development Office.

- Contact with donors, news media, vendors who handle printing and mailing of publications.

Physical Demands

Must be able to move about campus and visit off-campus sites. May require prolonged sitting up to eight hours per day.

Description of Job Duty

- In partnership with the Executive Director and using independent judgment, develop and execute communications strategy for Rice 360, both internally and externally, for project-specific work, such as creating communications materials for the Global Health major and the Institute’s Tanzania program project expansion.
- Provide support and assistance in planning, developing, producing and delivering marketing and communications materials to maximize engagement with the Institute.
- Support fundraising activities by promoting awareness of and engagement with the Institute through communications that include an annual report, newsletters, web content, social media, and other digital channels.
- Create and distribute a quarterly newsletter (digitally and in print), monthly updates, quarterly Dean’s updates, proposals and Day One Campaign communications.
- Maintain Rice 360 website and social media presence, including writing and updating copy and updating images on a regular basis, as well as design and content.
- Facilitate and maintain intern-donor communications, alumni communications and donor stewardship communications, as necessary.
- Analyze marketing and communications programs and make recommendations to adjust strategy and tactics to increase effectiveness and engagement.
- Coordinate the appearance of all Rice 360 print and electronic materials (including letterhead, logo and brochures) to ensure a consistent and recognizable brand and graphic identity.
- Be responsible for ensuring accuracy of information and proofreading on all communications.
- Use Rice 360’s contact management system to create and send emails, newsletters, etc.
- Develop and oversee the communications calendar to ensure timely distribution of all external content.
- Produce collateral materials for internal and external meetings.
- Manage all photo requests and photo library.
- Coordinate with Development writers and Public Affairs department as appropriate.
