Position Summary

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all of the Jones Graduate School of Business Executive Education’s (EE) marketing strategies, marketing communications, and brand awareness activities, both external and internal. S/he is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all of the Jones Graduate School of Business Executive Education’s (EE) marketing strategies, marketing communications, and brand awareness activities, both external and internal. This individual oversees development and implementation of research, support materials, and marketing and communications services supporting EE open enrollment and custom executive education business development and sales. This position also directs the efforts of the JGSB executive education marketing and communications staff and coordinates closely at the strategic and tactical levels with the larger Rice Business marketing organization. This person will be closely aligned in supporting the EE business development and sales professionals in expanding and extending reach, brand awareness, and program sales.

The position reports to the Executive Director for executive education, and serves as a member of the EE management team. This position participates with EE leadership and other management staff in charting the direction of the EE organization, assuring its accountability to all clients and stakeholders, and ensuring its effective operation. Within EE, the position has primary working relationships with the Executive Director, senior management team, staff of the marketing/communications function, and service providers.

Internal / External Contacts

Varied, both inside and outside the University. Will have daily contact with Rice Business management, faculty, staff, and students. Regular contact with other departments, particularly University administrative/financial departments. Outside EE, the position coordinates on behalf of Rice Business EE with broad marketing and communications partners and vendors.

Physical Demands

Light physical demands, consistent with office environment. Occasional lifting, up to 15 pounds. Frequent walking from one building to another on campus.

Working Conditions

Must be able to effectively handle occasional stressful situations, critical deadlines and changing priorities. Will be required to work some weekends or evenings. Non-smoking environment. Must have flexibility with work hours.

Description of Job Duty

- Responsible for creating, implementing, and measuring the success of: a comprehensive marketing, communications, and branding program that will enhance the EE’s image and position within the marketplace, and facilitate internal and external communications; and, all EE marketing, communications, and brand building activities and materials including publications, media relations, client acquisition, and digital and social media marketing campaigns.
- Ensure articulation of EE’s desired image and position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout the Rice Business and Rice, and assure communication of image and position to all stakeholders, both internal and external.
- Coordinating with Rice Business marketing and communications leadership and staff, supporting editorial direction, production, and distribution of all EE publications.
- Coordinate the appearance of all EE print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, etc.
- Ensure that the EE partners regularly with the larger Rice Business Marketing team to conduct relevant market research and coordinate and oversee this activity on behalf of EE. Monitor trends in digital and social media marketing.
- Leads projects as assigned, and related marketing and special events.

- Responsible for the achievement of marketing/communications/branding mission, goals, and financial objectives. Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress to the Executive Director and JGSB leadership.
- Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing/communications/branding program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence, and evaluate performance.
- Recommend short- and long-term EE goals and objectives to the Executive Director. Drive the development and implementation of an EE strategic marketing plan.
- Develop, implement, and monitor systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the marketing/communications/brand building function.
- Keep informed of developments in the fields of marketing, communications and branding, higher education, university-based executive education, and the specific business of the EE using this information to help EE operate with initiative and innovation.
