Work Schedule

This position is required to work during and after normal work hours, to include nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Operations for Housing and Dining, the Operations Manager is responsible for providing tenant services for two or three Residential Colleges, their associated Magister houses, Residential Associate apartments and classrooms. Working closely with the Director of Operations, the Operations Manager will deliver high quality tenant services through excellent communication, planning, oversight, and work order system monitoring.

In food service management, hotel and restaurant management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

License/Certification Preferred

Certified Food Handler’s Permit necessary as issued by the City of Houston Health Department (or ability to obtain within 90 days).

Skills Required

- Strong interpersonal skills; must be able to deal effectively with multiple priorities on a timely basis. Ability to think and act in the moment, make decisions using good judgment.
- Generalized computer skills- word processing and spreadsheet.
- Excellent interpersonal motivational and organizational skills; must possess ability to remain pleasant under stress; must be skilled in public relations.
- Skill and knowledge of commercial or institutional food service management.

Skills Preferred

- Bilingual English/Spanish.
- Familiarity with computer-based housing management systems.

Internal / External Contacts

Extensive contact with the students, Magisters and College Coordinator, RA’s, Facilities, Engineering and Planning, RUPD, contractors, vendors, and University guests.

Physical Demands

Position requires extended periods of standing, walking, and light lifting. Must have valid Texas Drivers License and be able to drive catering van.

Working Conditions

- Works inside, outside, and may be exposed to extreme temperatures and environmental conditions on a daily basis. Working hours may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- This is an on-call position that requires that the employee come into campus for emergencies after business hours and on weekends. The Senior Manager is required to attend campus meetings with students and student governments in the evening during the course of the academic year. This position has access to resident rooms.

Description of Job Duty

- Supervises one or two dining operations in affiliated serveries through executive and sous chefs.
- Responsible for meeting menu, quality, labeling and financial standards as set forth by Director of Campus Dining. Primary responsibility is assuring food safety.
- Supervision of dining staff includes increasing productivity, assuring staff stays on task, verifying procedures, processes, and initiatives are followed.
- Responsible for closing and weekend shifts and verification of a “close-to-open procedure” in which the kitchens are turned off, locked up, cleaned and ready for health inspection the following morning. Attention to detail is a priority.

- Responsible for providing leadership and forward development for two or three residence hall operations.
- Works to continuously improve service and place highest priority on tenant and staff safety.
- Maintains on-going contact with Directors, Chefs, and college leadership.
- Supervises custodial staff through a facilities supervisor.
- Monitors the housing work order system to assure work requests are completed and that resulting charges are appropriate.
- Responds to student and parent concerns and feedback.
- Follows up on existing work orders, verifies completion and routinely surveys residential buildings interior and exterior.
- Reports finding regularly to Operations Director.

- Responsible for supporting the Senior Leadership in related events. This entails collaboration and coordination with staff across campus. Related assignments may require investigation and research to find solutions to an array of dining or housing issues or opportunities and the implementation of these solutions.
