Position Summary

The Director of Communications is charged with directing marketing, branding, and communication strategies and tactics that promote a focused, consistent and positive image of the mission, programs and activities of the George R. Brown School of Engineering to internal and external audiences. This position oversees all digital and print publications, websites and social media promoting the School of Engineering. The Director reports to the Dean of Engineering and works with department staff to coordinate communication efforts across the nine departments of the School of Engineering.

Marketing, public relations, communications, or other relevant discipline.

Education Preferred

Master’s degree in public relations or communications.

- Experience managing communication and media campaigns for higher education organizations.
- Familiarity with engineering education.

Internal / External Contacts

Frequent contact with the Dean of Engineering. Daily contact with communications staff. Frequent contact with department chairs, program directors, faculty, resource development and public affairs representatives. Interacts with vendors as needed.

Physical Demands

Sitting or standing at a computer terminal for extended periods.

Working Conditions

- Develop, update and execute a comprehensive, measurable marketing and communication strategy. Based on the resulting plan, work with internal and external resources to develop and execute marketing and communication projects aimed at increasing the visibility of the School of Engineering, its departments, faculty, and students. Oversee communications efforts of the nine engineering departments and support them with the resources they need to increase their visibility.

- Supervise the editorial, graphics and web staff, including delegating relevant priorities, setting deadlines, developing objectives, and performing annual performance reviews. Oversee the marketing budget and vendor contracts.

- Work closely with department website managers to ensure fresh, accurate and compelling content on all School of Engineering sites. Develop creative ways to promote the School and its departments through their websites. Oversee the School’s social media strategy and the staff tasked with planning and execution, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram.
