Position Summary

This position provides customer support services to Rice University faculty, staff and students in the use of educational AV and computers systems.

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as a ‘first responder’ providing triage level support to faculty and others who are using instructional spaces.
- Performing remote monitoring classrooms systems to respond to and resolve detectable error conditions.
- Performing scheduled and unscheduled system maintenance as required.
- Performing scheduled and random testing of installed learning system and components.
- Assisting with tutorial learning sessions for faculty, administrators, and other system users.
- Providing occasional limited event support for university events and functions.
- Performing inventory activities; helping organize and maintain and adequate supply of spare components and consumables.

- Two years of experience supporting integrated audiovisual systems in an educational environment.

Skills Required

- Basic understanding of integrated AV systems and how discrete components work together.
- Ability to find and diagnose common system configuration issues.
- Ability to troubleshoot faulty systems to find failing components.
- Working knowledge of current operating systems for Windows or Macintosh computers.
- Experience with common computer applications such as MS Office, web browsers, email clients, etc.
- Must be able to use collaborative calendaring applications (Exchange, Google, etc.).
- Good judgment and verbal communication skills in high stress environments.
- Good written communication skills.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work assignments.
- Flexibility of work hours required.
- A high level of self-motivation, adaptability, and integrity is required. Must have a high energy level.
- Displays high level of tact and interpersonal problem solving skills when dealing with customers.
- Demonstrated aptitude to learn, especially new technologies concepts and applications.

Skills Preferred

- Basic understanding of integrated AV systems, signal types, communication protocols, etc.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting ability including experience using test equipment.
- Demonstrated team player experience.
- Ability to operate automated PTZ cameras in an event setting.
- Ability to operate manual cameras in an event environment.
- Ability to operate basic audio mixer systems in an event environment.
- Ability to quickly familiarize with and utilize new computer applications.
- Ability to perform basic cable management.
- Ability to terminate standard AV connections, including XLR, BNC, RJ-45, etc.

Internal / External Contacts

Frequent contact with faculty members, research staff, administrative staff, and students in all departments.

Physical Demands

- Must be able to lift and carry heavy supplies/equipment up to 75 lbs., ability to carry and stack boxes.
- Frequently required to walk across campus to respond to support calls and to deliver and install equipment in any campus building.

Working Conditions

Will be required to carry a cell phone and be reachable during off hours as determined by management; Special event assignments determined on an as needed basis, flexibility required; Hours may vary depending on specific job assignments. Staggered shifts may be required to provide early or late support; Non-smoking environment.
