Position Summary

The Children’s Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) at Rice University currently has a position opening for a mid-level or intermediate Statistician. CEHI is a research, education, and outreach program committed to fostering environments where all people can prosper.

The Statistician position requires a data analyst committed to public and environmental health and health disparities research. In addition to statistical capabilities, the Statistician should be comfortable reading the public and environmental health literature in order to generate research questions in collaboration with research team members; design relevant analyses to extend and expand on previous research findings; and interpret analytical results in light of the relevant literature. The Statistician will be involved in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts, from paper inception through submission and revision, as well as grant proposals. Successful applicants will be confident writers motivated to communicate complex statistical work to a non-statistical audience, be adaptable to changing priorities, and be able to integrate feedback to improve future analyses and text.

Skills Required

- Experience in data manipulation and analysis using SAS, R, Python, and/or STATA.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applied health statistics using a variety of statistical models.
- Training in and experience applying Bayesian methods.
- Ability to accurately and efficiently assess technical problems and program solutions.
- Must have outstanding attention to detail, be well organized, and have the ability to manage priorities and timelines across multiple projects.
- Must be interested in applied statistical research questions focused on health and the environment.
- Must be interested in writing academic manuscripts based on results of statistical analyses.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written are required.
- Must have good interpersonal skills.
- Must have experience working collaboratively with team members having different skills and expertise.
- Must have a proven ability to write clear and concise technical documentation for use by others.

Skills Preferred

- Causal inference as it relates to regression modeling with observational data.
- Spatial and spatio-temporal statistical analyses.
- Health-related datasets.
- R-Statistical programming language.
- Publication record commensurate with experience.

The individual in this position functions independently as a member of a research/study team, but will also lead and participate in projects involving team members with different expertise. Description of Job Duty

- Duties relate to the collection, compilation, and analysis of health and environmental data within an academic research program. This position will support development and application of statistical methods to assess how environmental and social exposures affect health and developmental outcomes across time and space, requiring knowledge and application of Bayesian, spatio-temporal, and multi-level statistical models.

- The responsibilities of the position will include providing statistical input in the design, execution, and analysis of scientifically conducted studies, with a focus on spatial statistics. The Statistician, in collaboration with the project team, will be expected to contribute to the intellectual development of research projects and draft scientific manuscripts for publication. S/he will participate in the development of operations and procedures for the collection, editing, verification, and management of statistical data. S/he will conduct data analyses using SAS, R, Python, or other applications, as appropriate. The individual will participate in the preparation of written reports and oral presentations that summarize the analysis of data, interpret the findings, and provide conclusions and recommendations. In addition, he/she will assist in the writing of grant proposals and reports, and perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
