Position Summary

Under supervision, the Custodian I provides routine housekeeping services to an assigned area in order to maintain a clean and safe environment for students, faculty and staff. Typical duties include removing trash from all assigned areas, completing the sanitation of restrooms and facilities, replenishing supplies, sweeping, dusting, mopping, and/or vacuuming floor surfaces, and cleaning and polishing furniture and other items as required. The Custodian I will also clean, polish, and store equipment after use.

Physical Demands

MEDIUM – Exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking or standing up to 8 hours per day. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, lift, see, reach, climb, and balance.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor work environment includes parking garages, parking lots, offices, etc. Exposed to temperature and weather extremes when working outside and in facilities that are not climate controlled.
Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.
Work Schedule: There is a possibility of overtime weekly. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to the BRC, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the BRC Director of Operations for the duration of a campus emergency.
