Work Schedule

Variable day shift work schedule: 40 hours per week. Normally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but schedule is subject to change without advance notice.
Mandatory overtime and occasional weekends, as needed.

Position Summary

The Controls Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties to perform installation, inspection, testing, and repair of pneumatic, electric and electronic control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hood, exhaust system, and the analysis of building systems. S/he ensures the efficient operation of HVAC controls and campus energy management system (EMS) to meet both comfort and conservation requirements. The Controls Technician should understand and possess the abilities to install, troubleshoot and repair refrigeration systems of all types.

This position requires on-call work on a rotating basis for the purpose of responding to call-out work after hours and on weekends.

Experience with a combination of formal training and hands-on experience in HVAC controls, energy management systems, metering devices (temperature, pressure, flow and electrical), instrumentation (calibration of 4-20ma current loops, RTDs, flow and pressure transmitters), electronic and pneumatic process control.

Five years of experience in a related field.

License/Certification Required

Refrigerant Transition & recovery certification or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of being hired.

Skills Required

Good technical skills and analytical ability is essential. A solid understanding and work experience working with HVAC controls. Must know and understand electric circuitry and pneumatic controls. Must have computer experience. Systems are sophisticated, state of-the-art interactive. The capability to fully understand these systems is essential in order to assure the most reliable and efficient operation of equipment. Must have the ability to quickly learn how to properly operate, maintain and calibrate these complex systems. Must apply safe work habits for safety of self and coworkers, uses tools and protective equipment carefully and correctly, and follow department and university safety rules.

Skills Preferred

Electronic repairs down to the component level, ability to read drawings and blueprints. Complete understanding of building, heating, and chill water systems and the controls associated with them. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are necessary.

Internal / External Contacts

Internal:
Frequent work with other HVAC craftsmen. Occasional work with other crafts. Interfacing with students and other BRC building personnel as well as contractors and vendors as the work requires.

External:
Communicates with vendors, contractors and service representatives regarding various equipment and systems.

Physical Demands

- Position requires moderate to heavy physical activity.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, stand/or walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift equipment loads (up to 50lbs) and be able to carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Must use stairs and ladders frequently. Conditions include need to walk through tunnels and climb over piping and equipment.
- Must use power tools and equipment.

Working Conditions

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to the BRC, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency. This may include working in flood or storm conditions to repair or restore damaged facilities and distribution systems.

Work requires exposure to high pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electrical systems, rotating equipment, and other potentially dangerous equipment.

Extended hours and call-outs will be necessary when problems develop that require special attention. Modified work schedule may also be required. Will be “on call” on a regular schedule.

Must frequently work in confined spaces such as mechanical rooms, which may not be air conditioned or heated. Will require working in dusty, dirty and wet conditions on occasion. Hearing protection, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes may be required as deemed necessary for safety in various areas in BRC facilities.
