Position Summary

The Senior Director for IT Operations & Infrastructure, a new position, establishes unified responsibility for Rice University’s information technology infrastructure and infrastructure support and for leading the staff who design and operate it. The Senior Director is responsible for infrastructure architecture, performance, availability, incident, capacity, configuration, and change-management processes and for the tools to support 24×7 uptime and availability SLAs. The Senior Director will provide leadership in the design and development of network, storage and compute architectures, pinpoint problem areas, uphold product quality, and drive innovation and design with constant engagement across a variety of University stakeholders.

Management information systems, computer science, business or appropriate technical discipline.

May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Experience Required 10 years or more
Type of Experience

-10+ years of progressively responsible management experience in an educational institution or corporate setting with focus on strategic direction.
- 10+ years of professional experience managing the delivery of information technology services to a diverse user community.
-10+ years managing budgets of $8 million or more.
- A proven track record of building and managing world-class, large-scale, distributed, enterprise-class software and infrastructure tools and systems along with the knowledge and willingness to stay on top of the latest industry products and technologies to see how new technologies can be integrated into the IT workflow to drive efficiency gains.
- Strong experience in technology support models and IT service management.
- A demonstrated history of building and maintaining effective teams as well as successfully leading and driving strategic change in complex, fast-moving organizations.
- Successful experience integrating and realigning technology and technology-support organizations.

- Ability to articulate how to achieve and maintain high availability, system accuracy, financial and environmental sustainability, and efficiency across IT infrastructures.

Working Conditions

- As an essential employee during a campus emergency, this employee is expected to support IT crisis management. At the direction of the IT crisis management team, the employee may be required to report to campus during or after an emergency, provide IT related essential services on site or remotely, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of the campus emergency.

- Must deal effectively with stressful situations, critical deadlines, and a customer base with high service level expectations and a wide range of computer knowledge and sophistication.

- Normal 8am – 5pm with evenings and weekends as required to meet critical deadlines.

- Will be required to carry a cell phone and be reachable during off hours.
