Position Summary

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Communications and Marketing Specialist serves as the primary staff member responsible for establishing, monitoring and maintaining the department’s image and public presence, both electronic and print. This position will develop and execute communications and marketing strategies for the ECE Department and its various research groups using the appropriate media outlets for each audience. The research faculty is the most productive ECE faculty in the nation according to Academic Analytics with 14 million in annual research expenditures from 30 active research faculty, six teaching faculty, 190 graduate and 90 undergraduate students. The programs in ECE touch on 5 sub-areas of electrical and computer engineering including wireless; systems; computer engineering; photonics, electronics and nanoengineering; and a rapidly developing program in neuroengineering.

Skills Required

- Excellent writing skills and the ability to concisely and effectively communicate, both verbally and in written form with an excellent command of the English language, including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Proven knowledge of the web production process as well as social networking and social media optimization.
- Expected to maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times.
- Must be service oriented with a high attention to detail.
- Must have a mature attitude and be capable of making good decisions.
- Familiarity with content management systems, various social media outlets.
- Knowledge of current Web standards, XHTML and CSS.
- Ability to complete multiple concurrent work assignments, set priorities and problem solve while encountering interruptions in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure and concentration.
- Must be able to use work related computer applications including spreadsheets, word processing, forms management, publication applications, and Website content management.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Skills Preferred

- Ability to use applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop.
- Ability to code in HTML.

Internal / External Contacts

- Frequent contact with many offices within the University, including all offices within the division and other administrative and academic offices.
- Continuous contact with the student population, faculty, staff and vendors.
- External contacts include frequent contact with speakers and guests from academic, government and industry.

Physical Demands

Must be able to move event-related materials to and from event sites. Must be able to lift and carry 10 lb (plus) boxes. Must be able to get to other campus offices or events sites.

Working Conditions

Pleasant office atmosphere. May have long periods using the computer. Some weekends and long hours will be required with special programs and events hosted by the department – approximately 4 per year.

Description of Job Duty

- Develops, monitors and maintains a marketing strategy to boost the ECE department’s public presence and support the goal of becoming a top 10 department.
- Manages the department’s main website and provides creative, technical and editorial development for research websites. These sites work together to disseminate information about the research goals and accomplishments of various faculty and staff.
- Produces, edits, updates and posts online, news items for dissemination through appropriate media both internal and external in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
- Recommends appropriate strategies for developing new websites (internal or 3rd party development) and serves as liaison between faculty and 3rd party developers who have been contracted.
- Maintains departmental databases related to the public presence (alumni, affiliates, scholarship, etc.).
- Conducts and reports the results of online surveys as requested.
- Advises academic administrators on appropriate recruiting strategies.

- With the Visibility Committee Chair and the Department Chair, develops and implements a visibility plan that dictates events management strategy.
- Manages the department’s master event schedule in conjunction with the University and other departments’ schedules.
- Oversee the management of events, visitors, etc. and budget for these events.
- Manages the logistics for departmental events including the annual Affiliates Day, department seminar series, and endowed lectures.
- Prepares publicity materials for department events maintaining a consistent them and message across department group.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Manage Faculty recruitment/staff searches including booking travel, hotels etc.
- Creating PowerPoints for Departmental events.
- Schedule visits for visiting lecturers/scholars/researchers, interns, postdoctoral fellows; including travel arrangements and/or organizing visa applications.
- Preparing Professional Service Agreements as appropriate.
- Assisting in recruiting and managing reviewers for publications.
- Draft correspondence for Executive Administrator and Chair as appropriate.
