Position Summary

Rice University is looking for an experienced employee relations professional to join the Human Resources team. This position will play an important role in supporting and developing Rice’s world class staff through the employee relations function. Typical duties include working with supervisors, staff, and senior leaders in academic and administrative areas to maximize employee performance and engagement, resolving employee relations issues and conflicts, investigating employee matters, conducting exit interviews, tracking and trending turnover data, and managing and promoting university employee recognition programs, leadership development and other employee relations initiatives.

Skills Preferred

Facility with written and verbal Spanish, along with English, is preferred.

Internal / External Contacts

This person will interact with Rice faculty and staff, service providers and vendors, members of the Texas Medical Center, and other Houston institutions and institutions of higher education.

Physical Demands

General office environment. Ability to move about campus to attend meetings or to deliver / pickup packages.

Working Conditions

Additional hours will be periodically required in order to complete special or seasonal projects.

- Implement measures to increase staff morale, motivation and satisfaction.
- Promote and provide training on effective performance development practices.
- Guide and coach managers in handling employee relations issues including, employee concerns, attendance issues, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, performance development, behavioral issues, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and termination of employment.
- Initiate and conduct employee relations investigations with minimal oversight from supervisor.
- Interpret and communicate University policy and procedures.
- Conduct exit interviews, tracks university turnover and formulates reports.
- Prepare reports regarding employee terminations and employee complaints to identify possible trends.
- Coordinate employee recognition programs.
- Responsible for handling unemployment claims. Tracks and trends unemployment data, making recommendations and projections on unemployment cost.
- Provide guidance to the university’s Staff Advisory Committee.
- Promote Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to staff and conducts mandatory referrals.
