Position Summary

The Manager of Facilities & Buildings operates independently to manage construction, renovation, and space maintenance projects for the School of Engineering. This position will proactively identify and communicate teaching and research sensitivities to minimize impacts on faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in the George R. Brown School of Engineering due to FE&P projects.

- Will be required to work professionally with campus clients at all levels.
- Building occupants who may be affected by renovation, construction, and maintenance projects.
- Faculty, staff, students, and other researchers who are stakeholders in projects
- FE&P project managers, supervisors, crafts.
- Works with the Associate Dean of Engineering for Administration and Planning on all financial issues related to projects

Outside the University:
- Engineering and architectural consultants.
- Contractors, subcontractors, and vendors.

Physical Demands

- Frequent site inspections at many locations throughout the campus.
- Occasional wearing of personal protective equipment (helmets, mask, protective clothing).
- Essential employee required to work during campus emergencies.

Working Conditions

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency. Must be able and willing to enter all Engineering building spaces. Extended hours required as needed including evenings and weekends.

- Attend renovation project and utility outage meetings as needed to better understand the needs of FE&P and communicate the concerns and perspectives of Engineering stakeholders.
- Assist project managers by participating in the program, design, construction, and commissioning meetings communicating research sensitivities.

Description of Job Duty

- Develop a clear understanding of the buildings systems. (Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing) so that they can be explained to occupants, and undertake experimental assessments to determine how best to minimize energy utilization.
- Work with the Director of Sustainability and the Energy Analyst to minimize energy utilization by educating building occupants, identifying behavioral changes that may impact utility usage, and by monitoring any utility information that is available on-line to assess changes.

- Coordinate trouble-shooting where problems arise and conduct experimental solutions to ascertain the best course of action (e.g., dust in the room – where does it come from? What is the best solution?).

- Provide information to building occupants on activities of FE&P or contractors in the buildings and on energy-related issues; and communicate to FE&P regarding teaching and research activities that could impact construction or maintenance schedules in the buildings.
- Meet regularly with FE&P, consultants, and contractors to ensure Engineering building occupants and building managers are informed about any FE&P activities that will impact their research, work space, or work flow.

- Perform regular inspections of all Engineering buildings and identify and report routine maintenance problems to the Facilities Service Center.
- Provide on-site observation, trouble-shooting, inspections, and reporting of facilities needs in the buildings occupied by NSE. Follow-up and track resolution of reported issues.
- Assist FE&P by proactively identifying any concerns or problems in Engineering buildings by inspecting and monitoring the building systems, including proprietary equipment (e.g., fume hoods, biological hoods, and environmental rooms/boxes), lavatories, MEP, elevators, and interiors and exteriors).

- Engage in daily interaction with building occupants to identify concerns and inform them of FE&P and energy-related activities and to discern energy-and FE&P-related needs.
- Routinely conduct interviews with researchers and their staff to report facility and research concerns to the Dean of Engineering and the Assistant VP of Facilities, Engineering, & Planning.
