Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Development – Engineering (Team Lead), the Associate Director will collaborate with the team lead to develop and execute a major gift fundraising strategy for the George R. Brown School of Engineering in conjunction with the engineering dean and faculty. Specific responsibilities include the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donor prospects capable of gifts at the $50K+ level. The Associate Director of Development – Engineering will work directly with senior University officials, prospects, and key volunteers and prepare the way for solicitation by the President, other senior campus administrators (including deans and directors of academic units), members of the Board of Trustees, or other senior level volunteers.

Education Preferred

- Master’s degree.
- Degree in engineering or a similar degree from an accredited university.
- Rice University degree.

Individual fundraising experience with demonstrated success at securing leadership and/or major gift commitments.

Substitution for Experience Requirement

Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement.

Experience Preferred

- Fundraising within a higher education institution, particularly as a development officer within a school of engineering.
- Working within a school and supporting a dean and faculty.
- Working in a capital campaign.
- Planned giving, or corporate and foundation fundraising.
- Experience working in the engineering industry or a related field.

License/Certification Required

Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

License/Certification Preferred

CFRE (Certified Fund-Raising Executive)

Skills Required

- Strong interpersonal, speaking and writing skills to interact with prospects, donors and colleagues in a manner that shows understanding of the needs and interests of others and to work in a collaborative environment.
- Strong computer skills, preferably using equipment in a Windows environment and proficient with word processing and spreadsheet use.

Skills Preferred

Knowledge of fundraising database software.

Internal / External Contacts

INTERNAL: Will be in contact with all areas of the campus in person, by telephone and electronically. Will have extensive contact and occasional travel with the upper-level administrators.

EXTERNAL: Will be in personal contact with a wide range of volunteers, donors and alumni.

Physical Demands

No unusual requirements. Must be able to travel out-of-town alone and must be able to drive an automobile.

Working Conditions

Will be required to attend occasional after-hours functions. Will be required to travel up to 10% of the time.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

a. Maintains a portfolio of leadership and major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors with an emphasis on building a pipeline of $50,000+ gifts
b. Creates annual development plan with goals and objectives for the benefit of Rice University in consultation with development leadership, and provides regular progress updates toward those goals
c. Facilitates the involvement of recommended faculty, staff, and volunteers in major gift solicitations
d. Partners with development colleagues in support of fundraising initiatives and strategies for major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and principal gifts
e. Travels for the purpose of developing prospect relationships and solicitation of prospects

Description of Job Duty

a. Helps develop, under the guidance of division and school leadership, the fundraising priorities for the school, along with commensurate goals, objectives, and strategies in support of those priorities
b. Serves as advisor to the dean, department heads, chair holders, faculty and staff regarding fundraising activities
c. Serves as liaison between the school and Development and Alumni Relations Division
d. Manages and implements cultivation/solicitation/stewardship communications and events for the school

a. Exercises effective strategic planning skills through portfolio analysis and prospect strategy development
b. Exercises effective communication skills through inter-office interactions, written correspondence, and timely entry (and updates) of information in the database
c. Exercises effective collaboration through the use of prospect management and proposal submission protocols
d. Produces high quality written documentation for the purpose of strategic briefings, correspondence, and call reports
e. Follows the travel and expense policies in an effort to maximize the efficient use of resources
f. Develops an ongoing professional development plan

a. Participates in staff/university meetings, team planning retreats and workshops, and interviews for benefit of the Development and Alumni Relations Division
b. Attends University activities and events both on and off campus
c. Represents the division of Development and Alumni Relations at events and on University teams and committees

a. Provides strategic oversight and coordination of volunteers for specified advisory boards and committees in support of fundraising initiatives
b. Facilitates board and committee meetings by preparing for the involvement of volunteer leadership, creating materials to support volunteer efforts, and presenting updates on the status of fundraising objectives
