Position Summary

The System Administrator (SA) is responsible for provisioning, configuring, installing, deploying, operating, and maintaining OpenStax hardware and software, both in-house and using virtual hosted environments like AWS. The SA will also be responsible for the selection, installation, and maintenance of software development and testing environments. The SA participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the OpenStax infrastructure.

This individual will assist the OpenStax Tutor team with technical issues in all phases of all projects. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of other operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions.

This individual is accountable for the following systems: Linux systems that support Development, Quality Assurance, and Production environments.

Experience Preferred

- Experience coordinating, planning, and maintaining technology projects including initiatives in web, mobile, and research.
- Experience with AWS or other cloud computing services.
- Experience with data security.

Skills Required

- Well organized team player capable of scheduling and delegating project tasks.
- In depth knowledge of Linux-based system admin
- Background in deploying and maintaining Linux servers and large scale web applications and database services.
- Ability to learn new technology quickly and implement effectively.

Skills Preferred

- Expertise with Chef recipes for automating sys admin duties.
- Experience with AWS OpsWorks.
- Providing development documentation.
- Github expertise; ownership of release tagging and production branches.
- Ruby on Rails, Python experience.
- Configuring and maintaining web servers (e.g. nginx).
- Code and data security expertise.

Physical Demands

May work for extended periods at a computer (up to 8 hours).

Working Conditions

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required. On call for server maintenance.

Occasional travel to work with partners or attend conferences and meetings.

- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
- Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
- Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
- Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
- Be on call for server maintenance needs.
- Document system administration tasks, server setup and maintenance, and deployment procedures.
- Other duties as needed by OpenStax team.

- Engineering of hardware and installation solutions for various project and operational needs.
- Install new or rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project requirements. Install system packages as needed.
- Maintenance of github repositories, release tagging, and production branches.
- Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures. This includes writing scripts to simplify recurring tasks. Use tools like Chef to automate system administration tasks.
- Research and recommend cloud computing services and virtual environments for hosting application software, websites, and databases.
- Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
