Position Summary

The Rice Design Alliance (RDA), which is housed within the building of Rice’s School of Architecture, unites the university, Houston’s thriving design and building community, and the city’s broader public by promoting design as a way to transform the built environment in Houston. The organization promotes this agenda through educational programs, media platforms, and networking opportunities. The Director will lead and direct the programmatic, outreach, and administrative functions. S/he will supervise a paid staff consisting of four full-time and two part-time employees; manage the organization’s budget, and work with the School’s Dean and the RDA’s President to develop committee structures and agendas to help the board advance the organization.

Education Preferred

An MFA or PhD in architecture or design is desirable but meaningful experience in lieu of/in addition to educational experience will also be highly valued.

- Excellent oral, writing, and listening skills.
- Ability to serve as a catalyst for colleagues and collaborators in enhancing design and the built environment in Houston.

Skills Preferred

- Teaching experience.
- Advisory board and volunteer management experience.

Working Conditions

This position is a full-time, 12-month, benefits eligible position that requires frequent evening and weekend work to accommodate regular programming. Position includes the need for domestic and international travel to host city tours and attend conferences.

Job Duties

Job Duty Name Leadership and Collaboration
Description of Job Duty

- Will lead and direct the programmatic, outreach, and administrative functions.
- Develop plans to achieve the organization’s mission and is responsible for directing the implementation of these plans.
- Liaison with the School’s Dean and the Alliance’s President to lead the Board and staff in the effort to define, articulate, and implement the vision for and activity of the RDA.
- Embrace collaboration across the city in order to broaden and deepen the RDA’s impact in Houston.
- Advocate on behalf of the RDA and the Rice School of Architecture to lay the foundations for future collaborations.
- Oversee the various boards of the organization (executive, membership, gala auction, programming, etc.).

- Oversee several fundraising events each year, including the annual home tour and annual gala.
- Work with the university development staff and RDA assistant director of membership to engage and solicit patrons at the highest level to fund programming and competitions.
- Submit grant proposals to various funding agencies.
